My niece travelled the world after graduating from university. One day she asked me something akin to “Why are Black people always in the bottom strata of societies in the African Diaspora, especially in the Americas and the Caribbean”. She described the poverty and deprivation she experienced amongst black peoples in several countries she had visited. Although post slavery effects are partly to blame, some of the current factors such as institutionalised racism, inequality, skin colour prejudice, need to be and are possible to overcome.”

This book is a passionate plea, with some suggestions, for improvements in the lives and conditions of the poor African Peoples (wherever they are). It compares the conditions of Negro slaves in the USA and the Caribbean (especially Jamaica) 200 years ago with today; and asks the question “Will the lives and conditions of the African peoples improve in the next 200 years?”

In 2024 it was 200 years since the publication of one of the seminal works of the campaign for the abolition of slavery in the British Empire, “Negro Slavery” by Zachary Macaulay. It is reprinted herein to make it more accessible.  In an impassioned introduction Karl “Aray” Miller’s aims include: reminding or informing the reader of the conditions of negro slaves; comparing how far the negro peoples have come since slavery; to promote peace and tolerance worldwide; to encourage meritocracy; to inspire academics to perform analysis and write a similar report of the conditions of the peoples in Sub-Saharan Africa in the present day; encourage all peoples to peacefully help in any way they can to bring about positive societal changes, and provide hope for the African peoples.

It suggests some actions that can be taken to increase the progress and sustainable development of the African peoples in the future. These include: a inter country Mentoring scheme for governmental organisations; Building Africa’s Negotiating Capacity for Improved Terms of Engagement with the Rest of the World; Implement a “Human Security Model” (Freedom from fear, freedom from want, freedom to live in dignity) and Africans should develop their own moral and political philosophies.

It is interspersed with anecdotes from the author’s life experiences. It includes a discussion on sufficiency and inequality, background information on Zachary Macaulay, some quotes from Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King jnr., and music after the 1960s. It introduces new concepts such as a new pronoun BA suffix (e.g., YoBA, HisBA) and the notion of Positive Future Footprint (similar to Longtermism).

Karl “Aray” Miller is a quirky left wing radical. He spent many years in the peace movement, being a member of groups such as Friends of the Dream, The Arms Reduction Coalition, Action for UN Renewal and United Nations Association. His passion is the help to impact improvements in the lives of the African Peoples.

50% of any profits earned from this book will be donated to Charities.

The dreams and opportunities of Africans have been stymied for the last 400 years. It is difficult to move on today, because we still suffer from the legacies of slavery. The lack of will to relinquish, dilute or give up power and white privilege presents a huge barrier to progress.”

“I wonder if the powerful elites that run the world will allow Africa to develop, like countries such as Saudi Arabia, South Korea and China, or at all. Whilst recognising the poverty of many people in the African Diaspora, I believe the sustainable development and improvement in the lives of the African Peoples (wherever they are) should be a top priority today. My perception is that the resources of
Africa are being plundered and the people are not benefiting from them. The conflicts, violence, sufferings and untimely deaths of Africans fill me with sadness. … The contempt that the wealthy elites have for the poor populace is abhorrent.”

“Perhaps many of the changes advocated below may not happen during the 21st century but I hope great progress will be made in the next 200 years.”

We are living in the Anthropocene geological epoch, where humanity is causing mass extinction and degrading earth’s systems threatening all life on earth.  .“But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism … keep peace with your soul. With all its (violence,) sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy” (the Desiderata). Enjoy! Whatever you do.
